Yes — plastic and silky mesh tea bags do. Hernandez and colleagues found that a single plastic tea bag steeped in hot water releases roughly 11.6 billion microplastic particles into the cup (Environmental Science & Technology, 2019). Standard paper tea bags shed some particles too, but significantly fewer. Switching to loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser eliminates this source entirely.
Use point-of-use filtration: a reverse osmosis system or a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 provides meaningful reduction beyond standard municipal treatment, which removes most but not all particles. Tap-water microplastic contamination was documented by Kosuth, Mason and Wattenberg in PLOS ONE (2018), which found microplastics in 81% of tap water samples globally. Yes. The first lake-wide survey, published by Eriksen, Mason and colleagues in Marine Pollution Bulletin (2013), found microplastics at every station sampled across all five Great Lakes, averaging roughly 43,000 particles per square kilometer of surface water.
